Competition time

We want your photos!

We've teamed up with Bright Publishing, publishers of Digital SLR User and Photo Pro Magazine, to host our latest photo competition. This time we're looking for 12 winning photos to form a photo calendar, and each winning photographer will get a copy of the calendar and £100 credit to spend at PhotoBox. There's no set photographic theme or category to stick to, and images don't necessarily have to represent a particular month or season on the calendar, so be as creative and imaginative as you like.

Winners at Waterstone's

Visit Waterstone's flagship store in Piccadilly between 6th & 31st July to see the winning photos from our recent DK Eyewitness Travel Photo Britain competition. The overall winner is Frame Muller's photo of Leeds Castle at sundown, which will be published on the front cover of DK Eyewitness Great Britain 2010. The exhibition photos represent a fabulous snapshot of the natural beauty and historic landmark sites that make up Britain, chosen by a panel of judges including world-renowned photographer Tom Ang. Photos range from an impressive cloud-like formation of a flock of Starlings, to the iridescent reflections of Perranporth beach.

Colourful Kew

With the hot summer weather now’s the perfect time to enjoy a trip to Kew Gardens. It’s always a great place for taking photos but from now until September there’s the added incentive of being able to visit the International Garden Photographer of the Year competition. It’s a real riot of colour and creativity and once you’ve paid the entrance fee to Kew Gardens the exhibition is free. PhotoBox is proud to sponsor this fantastic competition and if seeing the photos inspires your own creativity you can enter next year’s competition and who knows, you could be exhibiting at Kew this time next year!

Top Tripod

Need a steady hand but don't want to lug a heavy tripod around with you? This great little gadget, a Bottle Top Tripod, is just what you need. Just stick it on top of any standard size screw top bottle and you've got a steady stand that lets you snap away. It's perfect for self-timer shots, low-light photography, and of course party pictures where there won't be any shortage of bottles to choose from! At just £6.95 it's must for any keen compact camera snapper.

Pet present

Pet's Eye View

Here's a really fun idea for all you pet lovers out there, treat your dog or cat to a Pet's Eye View digital camera. This brilliant gadget means that just in the same way you love your photos now your pet can too! Just attach the camera to their collar and set it to take photos every 1-15 minutes. t’s great for seeing life from your pet’s viewpoint, or for spying on what they got up to while you were at work all day. Just don't get jealous if their photos turn out better than yours!

London Life

London Through a Lens

For a taste of life in the capital over the past century, get along to the new Getty Images Canary Wharf site at One Canada Square. From now until 31st July they are showing an exhibition entitled London Through a Lens. It’s a wonderful insight into London’s cultural, social and political history. It focuses on everyday life as well as the unusual, showing the incredible diversity that is London life. Best of Beaton

This month I just had to pick the Cecil Beaton: Portraits exhibition on at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Beaton had a huge influence on portrait photography as this exciting exhibition shows. In fact so admired was his work that he got to photograph the most famous faces of his time, ranging from the Queen to Mick Jagger, Marilyn Monroe and Winston Churchill. A visit to this exhibition will prove to you that his work is every bit as inspiring today as the day that he shot it. Admission is free, exhibition ends 31st August.

Photography tips

Off centre

It’s tempting to just aim your camera directly at your subject and shoot. You can create a more dynamic feel though by placing your main subject slightly off centre.

Mirror image

Seeking symmetry in your photos can be very exciting. Look for interesting examples such as reflections in lakes or puddles, or many modern buildings have reflective surfaces which are fun to play around with.

Exhibition time

Become a regular at photography exhibitions, it's a brilliant way to get inspired and give you ideas for your own images.
