Shoot London with Shoot Experience

Shoot Experience is putting a new spin on their famous experience photography days with Shoot London. The event takes place at Tate Modern on 16th May in the form of a novel adventure where participants are given words or phases from a story and have to go and shoot something to illustrate the words. At the end of the day teams are shown the full story on screen at Tate Modern. This event is sold out but you can enter the draw for last minute tickets by 14th May at ticketing@tate.org.uk with the subject line ‘Shoot London draw’, stating a contact number and team name for a chance of last minute tickets. PhotoBox is also printing all the photos from the day for an exhibition at the Host Gallery. You can catch the exhibition from 23rd -30th May.

This month we’re loving…

Here are a few of our favourite things!

Read it right

How to Read a Photograph

Ian Jeffrey’s new book How to Read a Photograph is the perfect way to gain greater insight into some classic pictures by well-known photographers. In all, this book covers more than 100 major photographers including Bill Brandt and Henri Cartier-Bresson, with background information on both the photographers and their images. This brilliant book is a really enjoyable way of helping to decode photos and act as fuel for your own photography projects.

Paris all-nighter

all night tour of Paris

How’s this for a fun night out with a difference. Join a group of photography fans on 30th May for an all night tour of Paris, getting great ideas on how to photograph this fabulous city as you go. It’s certainly one way of beating the crowds and all it costs to take part is a fiver once you get there – time to book a Eurostar ticket me thinks! Full details and itinerary will be available on www.gsnowdon.com.

£5000 prize

Project Assistance Awards

For a taste of the high life captured by the late Lord Litchfield during the swinging sixties and seventies, get yourself along to Fame, Fashion and Fast Cars. This exciting new exhibition is on at Lord Lichfield’s former Staffordshire home, Shugborough Hall, where at the age of seven he first got a taste for taking photos. The images on show include portraits of Sir Roger Moore, Dustin Hoffman, Mick Jagger and racing legend Sir Stirling Moss. Exhibition runs until October.

Animal magic

From 8th May until 27th September you can see Animalism at the National Media Museum in Bradford. This fascinating new exhibition takes a look through the power of photography, television and film at the way we treat and portray animals. It also observes the differences and similarities between us. It’s packed full of interesting images and plenty of thought-provoking insights. Entrance is free.

This month's feature: Be a better wedding photographer

Learn how to take great wedding photos

Wedding photography is a job best left to the professionals. While the official photographer is busy taking time consuming group shots though, you've got the perfect opportunity to capture the more candid moments. Exactly the kind of images your bride & groom are bound to love.

Be sure to get into the habit of taking a few shots of each image, that way you won’t be disappointed when someone has their eyes shut or is pulling an awkward expression.

Photography tips

Filter it

A polarising filter is great for minimising unwanted reflections, but can also be used to strengthen reflections you do like and want to make the most of.

Take it easy

The more time you spend with people the more comfortable they tend to get and feel able to relax in front of the camera.

Candid camera

The trick with getting a great candid shot is to not get involved in what’s happening, just let events unfold before you.

I have just received the diary I ordered as a gift for a friend. I am extremely pleased with the quality, not just of the photos, but also the printing material used…the diary surpassed my expectations.
Rachel Cremona

Having only place my order last night I am amazed they are now dispatched. You never cease to amaze me.
